Expectations
Who are MN-LHS Fellows?
MN-LHS fellows are post-graduate training scientists seeking to deepen their knowledge and skills in learning health systems (LHS) research. Typically, fellows are already enrolled in another fellowship program (e.g., Clinical Informatics) that has opted to participate in the MN-LHS training program to provide their fellows with more intensive exposure to LHS competencies.
What learning opportunities are provided?
Fellows have access to the following:
- Monthly Design Shop external speaker sessions addressing LHS competencies
- Monthly Design Shop interactive “Crosscutting Challenges” series
- Monthly iMpact seminars (offered through CLHSS)
- Quarterly Implementation Science Journal Club
- Annual AiLHSS conference
Attendance at Design Shop external speaker sessions is required, as are any "Crosscutting Challenges" sessions specifically geared toward fellows. Participation in all other activities is optional, unless mandated by the home fellowship. Additionally, fellows may request access to course materials for the "Conducting Health Outcomes Research" course (PUBH6864).
Do I need to complete a project as part of the MN-LHS fellowship?
Most fellows will be required to complete a project through their home fellowship. These fellows are encouraged to incorporate LHS- focused competencies into their existing project. Fellows can request funds to support the incorporation of LHS competencies into their fellowship project. For fellows not required to complete a project, it is encouraged that they either: a) Join an ongoing project at the Center for Learning Health System Sciences, or b) Create a small project specifically for the fellowship.
Will I have the opportunity to interact with other fellows?
Yes! A group orientation will be held where fellows can meet each other and other MN-LHS trainees. Throughout the program, there will be additional networking opportunities. However, the best way to engage with other fellows is by attending the
learning opportunities outlined above.
My home fellowship lacks expertise in my selected domain. Is additional mentorship available?

What other elements are required for the MN-LHS fellowship?
Fellows will be asked to respond to periodic (~twice per year) requests for information, such as details on conference presentations, which are necessary for federal reporting.
